Best Seller Afghan Saddle Bag

Hand-knotted in Afghanistan between 1950 and 1980, this saddle bag was made for life on the move. Woven as a joined pair to drape across the back of a horse, camel, or donkey, it carried grain, tools and clothing between seasonal pastures.

The foundation and pile are hand-spun wool, punctuated by small accents of colour worked from recycled synthetic yarn. Nomadic weavers salvaged these bright threads from available garments and textiles, knotting them directly into the pattern alongside the fleece.

Each piece has been washed and revitalised, leaving the original repairs, surface wear and natural irregularities intact. In the home, it functions well draped over an ottoman or bench, hung flat against a wall, or unstitched and tailored into cushions.
