Fan Favorite Afghan Maimana Kilim (35)

A Maimana kilim begins without a drawing. Women in northern Afghanistan weave the patterns from memory, using forms passed from mother to daughter. Each weaver changes the spacing, scale and colour as she works, so no two kilims follow exactly the same pattern.

The rug is handwoven from Ghazni wool using a flatweave construction with no raised pile. It is relatively light, hard-wearing and fully reversible, allowing either side to be used.

The bold geometry gives a Maimana kilim a strong presence, while the flat surface makes it easy to place beneath furniture, layer over a larger rug or use in a busy part of the home.
