New Arrival Vintage Turkmen Engsi Rug

An engsi is a format, not a tribe. It was woven as the door covering for a Turkmen yurt, which explains the strong vertical layout and the quartered field often seen in these rugs.

The composition is commonly divided by a cross-like structure, then enclosed by multiple borders. Small tree, animal or geometric motifs may fill the panels, while a directional lower section marks the threshold. Every part of the design relates to entering and leaving the home.

Engsis were woven by more than one Turkmen group, so the doorway format is the key to understanding the design. Its purpose and structure are inseparable: a textile threshold transformed, over time, into a highly distinctive floor rug.
