Fan Favorite Afghan Maimana Kilim Runner (15)

In runner form, a Maimana pattern develops as a sequence. Geometric forms repeat, change scale and occasionally break rhythm as the weaver works along the length without a drawing. The tradition belongs largely to women in northern Afghanistan and is passed from mother to daughter.

Ghazni wool is handwoven into a flat surface with no raised pile. The runner is relatively light, fully reversible and practical beneath doors or through narrow areas.

Small changes in spacing and colour show where the weaver made decisions as the pattern grew, giving the long composition movement without relying on a central medallion.
